Pet Accidents and your Kenosha Home’s Carpet and Upholstery

We all love Fluffy and Spot – but when they leave fluff and spots all over the floor and furniture, it’s hard to be happy. Fortunately, “the dry guys” can help make your carpets, rugs, and upholstery smell and look fresh and clean – even with multiple pets in the home.

Pet accidents on carpet

For those with small pets and furniture that can be crawled under or behind, not all pet accidents will be found right away. It’s important to find out exactly where the damage is and how extensive it has become. “the dry guys” can perform a pet urine and odor inspection and report, clean your carpets thoroughly, and leave you with a kit you can use in combination with common household items to treat pet accident stains immediately.

For stains on carpets, first scrape up excess solids, and blot wet spots with clean white paper or cotton towels. Be careful not to rub or scrub – this will cause the residue from the pet accident to spread and invade the carpet fibers. Next, mix ¼ cup vinegar and ¼ cup water to create an odor neutralizing solution. Moisten another clean towel and dab the affected area, then blot with a dry towel. Repeat until you have removed as much of the stain as possible.

Shake HOST Dry Carpet Cleaner (available in our spot treatment kit) onto the spill until covered, then brush it through the carpet in all directions. After brushing, pack the area with another handful of HOST Dry Carpet Cleaner. Finally, allow the affected carpet area to dry completely (this can take up to 12 hours) then vacuum thoroughly. You may want to block off the area so it will not be stepped on by your family or pets.

Pet accidents on upholstery or rugs

Upholstery fabrics and rugs are far more likely to bleed color, so the method of spot cleaning is slightly different. First, carefully remove any solids (again, don’t rub or scrub) and blot any liquid with a clean white cotton towel. If the pet accident is on a rug, lift up and place another towel underneath.

Do not use any liquid to dilute the stain. While we recommend a mix of vinegar and water for carpet, this can cause your area rug or upholstery fabric to bleed. Let the stain air dry, and vacuum lightly with the proper attachment. You can use an approved odor removing spray if desired.

If a stain is still visible, call “the dry guys” to come and clean it – we use the Von Schrader Dry Foam Extraction System to carefully deeply clean your upholstery, and also provide careful area rug cleaning that varies depending on the age, material and construction method of the rug.

Don’t feel like you have to replace carpet and furniture every year or so just because of pet accidents. Learn how to detect and deal with stains and smells, and use “the dry guys” as needed for a more intensive cleaning. Your furniture, carpets and rugs can last for years with proper care.
